Hi Lee and all

Well, the ALDinHE Steering Group is looking at exactly that - i.e. the possibility of something live, online and MOOCish as reported / suggested on this list a number of times over the last year. And this would be in line with our participation in the JISC's Developing Digital Literacies programme and probably utilising Blackboard Collaborate ...

We asked previously for expressions of interest in helping us to set this up/ moderate ... we have a couple of volunteers and would be v happy to hear from others ...

I hope Steve Rooney our Chair won't mind me saying that you should contact him in relation to this at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

I like the idea of developing an online community of practice – but is a blog the best tool for this? Would this be better served by a content management system or social network with the option for blogs, discussion forums and resource repositories? Even if that does ‘sound nice’ – would people use it?

I certainly agree with Pauline that both forms are complimentary. The discussion list provides fresh and topical debate – there is always a need for that. I would however find it useful if there were an online resource that interactively draws everything together. At present, much of the web presence is static and anything interactive is in pockets. At least this is how I have interpreted it so far!

Best wishes,

Lee,

This is one of the functions that we envisaged when we originally set up the ALDinHE Professional Development site (http://aldinheprofdev.wordpress.com/ )

I think this or any other such site and the LDHEN list should be seen as complementary rather than alternatives. It provides a space for ideas and resources (often picking up on discussions that started on the LDHEN Jiscmail list) and anyone can contribute just by leaving a comment on the relevant section. Please take a look and see if it might meet your suggestions rather than starting a new site elsewhere.

Best wishes

Picking up from Paul’s message about a community of practice and John’s message about the LDHEN list and is it still purposeful, and the call to action in Paul’s keynote speech at ALDinHE last year...

Are there plans afoot to move the LDHEN list into more of a community of practice type-setting, using/developing the online tools available now that just weren’t around ‘way back’ in 2003(? 2002?) when the list first started? I’m asking because there’s so much interesting stuff in the discussion threads that I file away, thinking ‘oh, I’ll pick up on that when I have more time’, or ‘oh, that’s useful, I’ll file that away for reference’ and then when something prompts me to look for the thing that was interesting or relevant at a later date there’s too many interesting things filed and I don’t always find the thing or it feels too much time has passed to take the action I planned. And so I was wondering if the functionality of a community of practice type group would mean that some of these difficulties would be eased. I don’t know if it would, and whether/how it would work, but I’d be interested in actively exploring this and helping to make it happen.

Does this resonate with anyone else? (Or of course I may simply be on my own/out of the loop here – it’s not an unfamiliar position!)

Nick's response had provided some foundation stones for a more pleasing response to the reviewer's recommendation, which, for me confirms that it was well worth opening up this discussion.

Having read all the responses, maybe the simplest thing would be to write back to the reviewer and ask for clarification.

Ah! you can't, it's anonymous!

Next best thing - ignore it.

Or be really brave and write into your manuscript that someone suggested that it ought to contain "deeper exploration and discussion of ... learner-centered behavioural science," but as neither you nor anyone else knew what the reviewer was talking about, you didn't waste your time trying.

Thanks for the prompt responses, David.

I have been asked to address reviewer feedback in response to a

manuscript I submitted for publication. One (anonymous) reviewer has

commented that in terms of background, my manuscript needs "deeper

exploration and discussion of ... learner-centered behavioural science."

They don't explain further and therefore I am currently sending out some

feelers to see if the expression "learner-centered behavioural science"

strikes a chord with anyone involved in research in student learning.

If anyone has relevant suggestions as to possible meanings, I would be

most happy to hear from them.

Best wishes

Margaret
