I think Andrew made a really important point about students being central to any discussion of what constitutes good practice in teaching - as John put it earlier, it needs to be considered as such by those who have legitimacy and authority in the context. The students being taught are, presumably, major figures in that category.
Here, Edinburgh University Students' Association started the annual EUSA Teaching Awards about 5 years ago: these are entirely run and voted for by students and awards in various categories are presented at an awards ceremony. Here's the link to their page that poses the question: What is good teaching? http://www.eusa.ed.ac.uk/teachingawards/whatisgoodteaching/ It may be instructive that they don't try to over-constrain this.
Previous award winners are also invited to speak / present at the annual Inspiring Teaching conference that EUSA runs for staff and students to further disseminate good practice.
