Dear all,
I have set an email enquiry to AMOSSHE. If they are unable to provide useful stats I will circulate a word doc next week for anyone interest in participating in an informal and unofficial survey, and include a personal email address for return.
I will collate data and circulate results here.

Hi all
I know that AMOSSHE collate and map pay and responsibilities every 2 years for their IRMs. So it might be worth seeing how theirs works or doesn't and whether it is felt to be a useful influence when new posts are graded. I know it's used to track pay trends in student services management across the sector at the very least.
Best

I am term time only at work which means I can find a few hours for this in my own time over summer. If anyone wants to contribute, I believe we would need brief job title and description details, the department LD/study skills is located in your institution, and pay. I think also relevant is if the contract is term time only especially where there is a Faculty of Health and Social Care as those faculty students don't typically finish at the same time as other students. If anyone can suggest other categories which would be useful I'd be more than happy to include them. Also I think it might be useful to indicate if the job description has been changed in the evolution of the service at particular institutions to reflect increased demands or employee profile but without enhanced salary.

More specifically, the details given include the following paragraph:

Here at Plymouth University I'd not be happy having anyone conduct tutorials or teaching ('delivering workshops') on such a low rate of pay. I might be happier if this person were assisting with or contributing to these activities. An LD post here would start at £31,020 pa - with 30 days paid leave. This equates to about £18 per hour. For comparative purposes it may be useful to know that our undergraduate peer learning leaders are rewarded with honoraria equating to £8.00 per hour. Their key role is to plan and facilitate group learning sessions for fellow students and to liaise with Learning Developers and academics.

>>> I think everyone sympathises with your dilemma - i.e. between a 'needs' rock and a budget 'hard place'. Wouldn't the UK Tertiary Education Union be involved in the process, though? Here in NZ, we've found the union very helpful in making a case for pay, conditions and recognition. By the way, the centre I work for pays casual part-time student mentors the equivalent of 13 pounds an hour - and New Zealand, in general, is a low-wage economy compared to the UK. So, the pay on offer there for a senior staff member does seem out of proportion to the skills and experience required. Good luck with it!
