Hi Nick
... it sounds good! And I know not everyone may be able to go to a workshop - but offering practical suggestions on the list that folk can simply consider to try/adapt in their various learning development type practices, and suggesting useful readings too - would be great, if you or others feel able to.
For e.g., I'm helping design a new PALS-style scheme in Plymouth, and we intend to get our PALS leaders in groups like 'action learning sets', mixing the disciplines and engaging in the kinds of critically reflexive work I think Nick is promoting ... it's always good to hear suggestions
V best

Hi Christine,
I think you already know about Shared Thinking and collective
reflection? At University of Glasgow we have used it for induction,
transition and mentoring. We've implemented it for Maths, Computing
Science and Psychology. We've also implemented it elsewhere for Health
Sciences and work-placements at new universities.
In terms of non-traditional backgrounds, at one new university it
included ex-professional footballers and mature students changing
careers; at the ancient university it included overseas students from
Europe and beyond. It also included students from a variety of ethnic
backgrounds. Indeed diversity is the driver of Shared Thinking
because, as a process, it seeks to generate multiple perspectives from
reflective dialogue and make them public as a resource.
We think Shared Thinking is a wholesale shift away from induction with
tutors-as-presenters to tutors-as-listeners. We have empirical data to
support this view of Induction (and placement-based learning) as a
highly social process of whole-group enquiry. The web site below has
more and I'm happy to answer any questions.
I'm running an experiential workshop next week. That's fully booked
now. I'd be happy to run another if there was further interest and an
available venue.
Best wishes,
Nick
