Hi Imose et al,
I know that the Write Now CETL - predominately at London Met and Liverpool
Hope Universities - utilise, train and support Writing Mentors who work
with our students at under- and postgraduate level.
They also treat their Mentors as co-researchers - and present at
conferences with them.
Their mentors have also presented at our own 'Getahead' student
conferences at London Met... (Video of our conference now uploaded to You
Tube: http://www.youtube.com/user/adm111)
I am sure that Peter O'Neill <[log in to unmask]>, the Write Now
writing specialist, could contribute to this discussion when he has the
time.
with best wishes,
Sandra Sinfield

> This year at Queen's in Belfast we piloted a peer mentoring project in the
> School of English. There were a few pitfalls along the way but overall
> the project was very successful and we will be running it again 09/10. It

> first years. The mentors, who had weekly meetings with a lead mentor,
> were guided by a member of LDS staff and a member of academic staff from
> the School. The weekly mentoring sessions were based around the needs of
> each group and mostly concerned transitional and pastoral issues but also
> included some study skills support. During some of the early sessions the
> mentors took the students on campus tours and tours of the library. In
> the second semester the mentors arranged workshops and information
> sessions with other services.
>
> The mentor training took place over 6 days in September and involved a
> course in mentorship and a course in facilitation skills. In 09/10 the

> Learning Development Service and some training from Counselling in how to

> chance to bond as a team and plan for the year. I can forward you some
> details on the content of the training.
