You may be interested to read my report that presents the findings of
LearnHigher/Write Now CETLs sponsored research involving the views of 278 UK
students, from 14 institutions of higher education, on their perceptions of the
roles of referencing in academic writing, and the problems they have encounted
with referencing. It also discusses the implications of the findings for UK
higher education, and suggests a staff development programme that engages with
the issues raised. The research was conducted over the 2008/9 academic year
and the results were presented at the 'Referencing and Writing' symposium,
University of Bradford, on the 8th June 2009.
