Dear all,
We're now entering the ASSESSMENT phase of the online evolving essay
project. I hope you will want to have a look!
Please see the following message from Peter O'Neill at the London Met
Writing Centre...

Dear colleagues,
As you may remember, Lynn Reynolds, an undergraduate Writing Mentor at
the London Metropolitan University Writing Centre, recently wrote an
online Psychology essay on Freud's theory of personality. Through the
use of a blog and a wiki, Lynn laid bare the entire process of writing
an essay from a student's point of view.
There are entries on a wide variety of topics and we can see the
development of her essay through online notes, freewrites, drafts as
well as the final version. She has had hundreds of visitors to her site
and there has been lots of excellent discussion, with lecturers,
students and non-academics taking advantage of the internet's unique
potential for non-hierarchical communication. Her entries have already
been used by Learning and Teaching staff to illustrate how one student
approaches her academic writing, and everybody has admired the obvious
enthusiasm and courage with which Lynn approached this very revealing
project.
We are now entering phase two of this project. Lynn wrote this essay
for fun. It was not part of her degree, as we did not want to run into
ethical problems. However, the Write Now Centre for Excellence in
Teaching and Learning arranged for a Psychology lecturer to assess the
essay according to the six assessment criteria which Lynn used to write
her essay. The lecturer has also assigned a mark for the essay. Lynn
has published the mark and the very detailed comments and is now
beginning to respond to the assessment.
This is an exciting opportunity for a student to reflect on issues of
assessment and we hope that a rich discussion will emerge. It would be
particularly interesting if an international audience took part and let
us know what they think of the way assessment is carried out here in the
UK. I am sure we can all learn from such a discussion. When we talk
about assessment, we often theorise about abstract categories, but here
is a chance to have a discussion firmly centred around one student and
her essay.
