Hi Jenny and other colleagues,
At Heriot-Watt University, we used to allow four opportunities for
summative assessment for each module; comprising an assessment and
reassessment opportunity in the year the student was studying the
module, followed by two further reassessment opportunities the following
academic year. However, from the cumulative experience of exam boards
it appeared that where a student had attempted and failed opportunites 1
and 2, (s)he seldom succeeded at either opportunities 3 or 4.
So the system was changed so that normally only two assessment
opportunites were allowed, i.e. an assessment and a reassessment
opportunitity in the year that the module was studied. This sent out to
students a clearer message than did the old assessment system.
Of course there is a Board that meets to consider requests for
additional assessment opportunities. So students who for good and valid
reasons merit these additional assessment opportunities would still be
able to access them.
Best wishes,
Isabelle

Subject: Student assessment and reassessment opportunities
Colleagues
I'd be grateful for your help.
Here at Napier we are reviewing the number of assessment and
reassessment opportunities we provide for our students. Could you let me
know what the position is in your institution, please?
Many thanks,
Jenny
