Hi,
Here at the Centre for Continuing Education at Manchester we have
a peer-mentoring scheme for our part-time tutors. Most of our
tutors in adult education are freelance and a mentoring scheme
provides an opportunity for staff development which is flexible.
We ask staff who are interested to apply to become mentors. They
are interviewed and we offer a training workshop before we pair
them up with mentees. We have a job description for mentors.
We recommend to new tutors that they should consider taking up
the offer of being mentored and more experienced tutors also value
the opportunity particularly if they are experiencing changes in their
classes. While mentoring does not feed into any kind of appraisal
we do encourage tutors to engage in staff development and being
mentored is evidence of their committment to staff development.
They are particularly encouraged to join the mentoring scheme if
they are new to adult learning. We expect mentor and mentee to
meet 4 times over 6 months and we ask that they let us know the
dates of their meetings (as mentors can claim a fee) and we also
ask that both mentor and mentee return evaluation forms at the end
of the process. We provide proformas for their personal use in
recording meetings and activities. After the six months some mentor
and mentee relationships continue on an informal basis.
I have attended the mentor training myself although I am not directly
involved in the scheme. This is just a departmental scheme and I
have no idea what the university runs.
I feel that it's a useful process and while I haven't been involved in a
formal scheme I've several times worked with a mentor in an
informal basis and found it helpful
All the best,
Ann
