Happy New Year all!
This discussion is very timely for us here at Exeter. Margo is
right, Exeter tend to leave referencing preferences up to the
individual discipline. This would be fine if all the tutors
agreed on one way of doing a particular system, but,
unfortunately, this is not always the case. Barbara and I see
some students who are very puzzled, as they have followed all
the guidelines in their department handbook, yet have still
been pulled up for their referencing, as their individual
tutors prefer to see titles of text written in italics, rather
than bold etc.
To try and get some consistency for the students, Barbara and I
will soon be sending out a questionnaire to ascertain which
versions of reference systems academic schools prefer. We will
then post the results on our website. Of course, we run the
risk of only reaching certain tutors in the Schools, but it
might help with any issues arising from misunderstandings or
any lack of clarity.
I will let you know how we get on!
Best wishes
Sarah
