Thanks Sandra - I realised after the earlier discussions that SEDA (Staff &
Educational Development Association) offer a Professional Development
Framework (PDF) that might be relevant for this - and in fact that already
includes a 'student support and guidance' version. So I guess we need to
think about what LDHEN could contribute to the various existing programmes
people have identified, in the way of accreditation and/or curriculum
content - the latter possibly online?
Let's keep thinking about this as LDHEN continues the debate about
professional recognition
Best wishes
Pauline

Dear all,
I'm not sure how long this discussion has been going on for (have just
returned from a sabbatical), but thought I'd throw in some ideas:
The University of Hull offers a Certificate in Advising for Language
Learning (online, postgraduate level, one year). I've taken this course
myself and found it extremely useful. The starting point for this
certificate was very similar to the one discussed here. Many people have
been working as an adviser or in a related position, but there was not
official qualification for this type of work. The course is set at
postgraduate level, and if you decide to carry on with further modules (you
do only 3 for the certificate) and a dissertation, you would end up with an
MA in Language Learning and Technology. As 99% of the students were
full-time practitioners, it was useful to have the choice between full-time
and part-time study. Also, delivering the course completely online, made it
possible for non-Hull residents to participate. In fact, the course was very
international which made the discussions extremely interesting as you found
about the situation in other countries.
Anyway, all I wanted to say is that the format and delivery of this course
would be a good example for a qualification in the area of 'learning
development'.
Best
Elisabeth
