In this institution the argument against giving out lecture notes
beforehand, in case the students fail to attend, appears to be less
prevalent than a few years ago. I have no statistics but many lecturers
do publish their notes on the intranet prior to the lecture and the new
'argument' is that students are adults engaged in independent learning
who are only responsible to themselves i.e. it's their loss if they
don't attend. From the Study Support perspective, many of our students
with additional learning needs HAVE to have access to hand-outs prior to
the event and often to other resources too. These may be students with
disabilities that necessitate a note-taker or dyslexic students that
have trouble assimilating a lot of information in a limited time period
for example. There may be two points of interest to anyone contemplating
research: firstly, disability legislation means that EVERYONE has to
avoid discrimination; so presumably supporting resources such as lecture
notes cannot be witheld? Secondly, if you're going to give them to
students with recognised needs, surely ALL students must be able to
access the same resources.

This may be tangential, but the RNIB have information about
'readability' in presentation of the document.

Subject: Literature about Handouts
Dear LDHEN Colleagues,
Is anyone aware of any literature about the effectiveness of handouts or
different types of handouts? Any starting points for investigation that
you have to hand would be much appreciated.
Many thanks if you are able to help,
Best wishes
