Earlier in the year I invited you all to complete an
online questionnaire regarding the relative use of the four
main UK referencing systems within HE. This was part of the
first stage of development for the 'LearnHigher' project
(referencing learning area) that I manage.
I offered three £10 wine vouchers as an encouragement and
lubricant to complete the questionnaire, and the names taken
randomly from the 16 results received are, as follows:
Viv Thom, Sheffield Hallam
Alison Green, Bournemouth
Pauline Ridley, Brighton
(sorry John!)
Vouchers will be sent this week, in time for Christmas.
And many thanks to all who completed this questionnaire. A
fair number of you started the questionnaire, but around 7
out of 10 abandoned it, when, it would appear, that many of
you found you did not have the complete knowledge to speak
for the institution as a whole and it would take too long
to find out.
In view of the limited, although very useful response, I
will be continuing with the survey, but extending it to
HE librarians.
However, of the 16 completed questionnaires received in this
first round of the survey, around 80% of all HE
Schools/Depts would appear to use the author/date (Harvard)
system of referencing, with the next group (around 20%)
using the bracketed number (Vancouver) system -
and the latter particularly within the disciplines of
creative/design, law & some humanities related.
So I will continue the survey and will be able to
give you all an extended result early next year.
But thanks again, colleagues, for taking the trouble to look
at the survey and particularly to those who persevered with
it.
