In response to John's email about cross-institutional referencing guidelines -
Over summer, at the request of the University's Quality Office, we wrote a
referencing template which is now an obligatory annex to all student handbooks.
This does not lay down which referencing system has to be used by subject
departments, but provides a template of detailed guidance into which each
department can slot their preferred system. The idea is to try to ensure a
consistency of guidance across the University, because some departments
previously provided very detailed guidance, whilst others provided nothing.
If anyone would like an electronic copy of the template, please let me know.
In response to John's question about how we cope in the Study Advice Services
with all the different referencing systems used across the University -
We have a large collection of department's guidelines at our advice desks, for
use with students when they ask about referencing - and do not have their
guidelines with them. As part of the obligatory guidance now in force (see
above), departments must also deposit their guidelines with us.
We feel that although these initiatives are still coming to fruition, they are a
great step forward in helping us to help students with this difficult (and
scary) topic.
