Hi Karen
This year we have established a sexual orientation working group and joined the
Stonewall Diversity Champions Programme to help us to identify the work that we
need to do so support LGBT staff and students. We are in the process of
developing an action plan which includes (in relation to students) advertising
'safe' space to be open about sexuality using the Stonewall logo; developing a
mechanism to enable a choice for students in residences to be housed with other
LGBT students; ensuring wardens in residences are trained in equality and
diversity including dealing with homophobic incidents and advertising this to
students; creating an LGBT student handbook; developing and promoting a public
seminar series focussed on LGBT issues. I hope this helps, best wishes, Hannah

Hello colleagues - as some of you know, Coventry University is now
working on a follow-on resource pack from "Meeting the Challenge", this
time aiming to support staff in working more effectively with
student diversity. As background, we have already undertaken research
with our own staff and students as well as liaised with Skill, the
National Union of Students and the ECU. However, what would be really
helpful would be to have some up-to-date examples of good practice in
HEIs. Many of you very kindly contributed such examples to the Equality
and Diversity database we developed last year but many related to
staff-based initiatives such as workplace nurseries, flexible working
and so on rather than to students.
So, if your HEI has developed particular strategies to support, say,
international students, mature students, disabled students, LGBT
students, women students in Science, Engineering and Technology or any
other group of students, it would be great to hear from you. Thanks to
those of you who replied to the first such request made late last year.
Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes
Karen
