Dear colleagues
It is probably not a matter of great importance, as what we call our
policies is of much less importance that the substance of them.
However, I would welcome your view on this.
The RR(A)A specific duties for HE (and FE, and schools) requires us to
have a 'race equality policy' in place.
At the Open University our existing document is called, a 'Policy and
Strategy for Race Equality'. This was possibly in recognition of the
fact that the document set out not just how we should work, but also
objectives.
Given that we are now developing 'Schemes' for disability and gender, I
wonder if anyone has, or is planning to, call their race equality
document a 'Scheme'?
I know that HEFCE's recently published consultation on their single
equality scheme contains a 'Scheme' for race equality, however, HEFCE is
listed in Appendix 2 of the statutory code of practice, thereby
requiring them to have a 'Scheme'. HE institutions are not.
In my view it would be a lot tidier and easier to communicate if we
could refer to our race equality scheme.
Has anyone consulted with the CRE on this, or have any thoughts or
practice they can share.
Many thanks
