Dear all
As most of you will be aware there have been some very interesting
and valuable postings to this list recently and some rather
disheartening ones too.
The aim of this list is to provide a forum for those interested in HE
to seek advice and to share expertise and EO related information.
If it is able to give a sense of community to colleagues and lessen
feelings of isolation in so doing, as the vast majority of feedback
and particularly the two postings below suggest, it appears to me
to be fulfilling its function.
I fully appreciate that not all threads will be of equal interest to
everyone, however, in the spirit of freedom of choice and equalities,
I would ask colleagues to exercise consideration for others and
discretion over the postings they choose to read. Responses to
postings are marked Re:[Original title] and can be quickly and
easily deleted if the thread is of no interest and read by others if it
is.
I appreciate that some postings are clearly sent in error and would
ask members to take care when pressing the reply button to
ensure that postings are relevant to others and not just directed at
one individual. As Felicity Hunt recently said, however, I do not
think that the recent postings regarding the departure from ECU of
someone whose contribution has been so enormously helpful to
the sector falls within this category.
I would also like to ask members to 'suspend' list membership
before applying automatic replies, hopefully, these measures will
reduce the annoyance clearly felt by some over 'inappropriate'
postings to the list.

Absolutely right, Naseem.
I've personally found this forum to be frank and useful, though I may
not agree with everything said nor always have the time to reply.
And,
it's heartening to be aware of who the participants are when they do
respond. I believe most of us work in very isolated situations buried
in large bureacratic institutions. A forum like this helps us to be
part of the wider context and to share and air our passion and
concerns. It also helps when we are not too serious all the time but
feel able to have some light-hearted moments. May 2004 bring us
hope.... Andy

Hi Mannie
Just to let you know that you will be sorely missed as you've been
inspirational and most supportive to equality colleagues in the
sector. Infact you single-handedly put the ECU on the map of HE
sector
through your determination and drive.
A word for colleagues who've bemoaned receiving various emails,
may I
point out that it's very rare in this day and age to compliment
colleagues particularly those that go beyond their responsibilities.
Many a times I've spoken to Mannie around 6.30pm on a Friday
evening
whilst he (and I for that matter) have been in our respective offices!
Most of you may not recognise or understand this. But for me this
was
real dedication and commitment in Mannie supporting and aiming
to meet
our needs. How do you think he managed to give considerate and
thorough replies to the queries we've raised over the years! Here is a
person who delivered and is passionate about his role and
commitments.
So applaud him and give him a pat on the back. Let him go with
feelings of goodwill. I'm glad there are many out there who feel the
same.
All the best to you and your family for 2004.
Naseem Anwar
