Please find attached, some information that might be of interest to some of
you.
While I am not recommending it for everyone as appropriate to use, it is for
you to look at and qualify as to whether it might be appropriate to your
needs or not. This is a process I hope you already adopt, with any material
that comes to your notice.
If any material was going to be used, it would ofcourse need to be with the
understanding that the user/trainer had the necessary knowledge, skill and
ability to do this,relevant to the established needs of those being trained.
Staff-training/development and/or support should always be defined by needs
that are established through an effective and inclusive Communication and
Consultation Strategy. This strategy would need to be seen to be linked to
all the institutional policies, functions, processes, procedures and
initiatives that are deemed to be race equality relevant.
We also need to remember that this is what our Race Equality Policies and
Action Plans have already stated will happen under the training and support
or staff development function. Who will make it happen, how, with what
outcomes,when, how it will be monitored, assessed and reviewed and what
resultant action will be taken should have been clearly defined in our
Policies and Action Plans.
If this is not done accordingly we might well find ourselves spending a lot
of money, either buying expensive materials or commissioning expensive
trainers and/or consultants who will leave our staff in a worse situation
than they were before the training!!
This is a waste of money, frustrating to our staff and does not contribute
at all to ensuring good institutional practice for all. It also might create
the wrong view that race issues are a waste of resources (time and money)
and are impossible to mainstream into institutional practice. This position
is most unhelpful, especially if we have already "fought the battle" of
convincing the powers that be in our institutions, that training will need
to be compulsory,if the institution is to respond appropriately to its
"vicarious liability" and "burden of proof" requirements, (not to mention
good race equality based practice)under the RRAA.
Some of you have voiced the need for materials that you could consider for
use, relative to your institutional Staff Development, Training and Support
needs and some of this might "fit the bill" for you.
