At Oxford we plan to move to the new census categories with effect
from the next academic year. I know that they have flaws and
weaknesses (though not in my view as many as the current
categories) but I have found it helpful to be able to produce direct
comparisons with the local census data for Oxford(shire) as well as
forthe UK. Our positive action programme on ethnicity hinges on
this, so I have bitten the bullet.

Thanks for this, Sally.
We're currently reviewing our Equal Ops monitoring forms, and
wonder
whether other HEIs are using, or plan to use, the census board's
categories in their forms. I personally would have trouble with them,
as, for example, I'm pretty sure that China is still part of Asia!
The CRE (on their website) appears to recommend use of the 1991
groupings, plus "Irish".
Any thoughts?
Regards,
Faith Marchal
