One should use categories that would yield information
relevant to your organisation. There is no point gathering
stats that ultimately have no relevance. One of our
ethnicity categories is Bangladeshi, collected because we
have a large Bengali community living close by and we are
interested to note, for example, how recruitment from this
local community is developing. This category would not
necessarily be of significant relevance to many other
universities.
The Census categories seem to be based on how people would
be perceived by others, (which can result in
discrimination). There is, for example, no Welsh category,
one would imagine that this is because this group are not
generally perceived to be at a disadvantage in British
society because of what they look like or previous
historical and ongoing issues, unlike the Irish who are
included.
