Dear Judith
I am coming to this debate very belatedly.
I agree that 'diversity' loses the important dimension of 'equality'
and feel that 'welfare' loses nearly everything, besides putting an
undesirable set of connotations on the issues covered.
In Europe they tend to use the word 'equality' where we use
'equal opportunities'. Have you thought of calling it the Equality
Committee or Committee for Equality?
Just a thought.

Subject: Committee names
Next year I propose to merge the policy making functions of our
disability, childcare, harassment and equal opportunities
committees . It has been suggested that we call the new
committee something other than the 'equal opportunities
committee' in order to reflect the principles of diversity and
representation, and to make clear that this is a merger and not a
take over.
What do you call yours, or can you suggest anything? I am offering
a bottle of wine for the best suggestion!
