We had some issues regarding accommodation for a student who had a guide dog. There were problems with size of accommodation and whether she should be given a double flat and charged the single occupancy rate or not. She was initially housed in one of our 'accessible' flats, but it was designed for wheelchair users and some of the adjustments were not suitable for a visually impaired resident. There was also an issue of easy access to the outside for the dog to relieve itself.
We learned from this experience and I believe we now have a policy that if double accommodation is required the additional cost is carried by the university as a reasonable adjustment. Accommodation staff have been provided with training, as have our residential assistants, so that we can respond appropriately to individual needs.

Subject: Assistance dogs policy
Dear colleagues,
We are in the process of drafting a short policy about assistance dogs
(covering such issues as what constitutes an assistance dog and what the
university should supply to support them).
Does anyone have any good practice they would be prepared to share?
Best wishes,
Moira
