There was a successful claim of sex discrimination a few years back. I don't have the full details but there were two applicants Darren and Catherine. Darren's application had too little information on it and the tribunal panel did not see how he made it through to the interview stage. There was also a lack of interview or shortlisitng notes.
The tribunal judge also made a point that there were no females on the shortlisiting panel and that it was good practice to have a balanced panel. Catherine scored more points overall. Catherine was awarded £30,000

Dear Rachael,
Whilst it is not a requirement of the law for panels to have equal gender or other equality representation, it can be seen as a positive action measure to support fair and open recruitment that gives candidates more confidence in the process and sends out the message that institutions are made up of different characteristics that reflect society. It also helps panels avoid 'group think', although they wouldn't admit this ever happens.
Kind Regards
Anne

Subject: Interview panels
Hello all
I have had a query from an academic member of staff asking if it is a requirement under the Equality Act 2010, that interview panels for student recruitment and staff employment should have an equal gender balance. The nature and subjects run within the school frequently means that interview panels usually consist of men only.
I have not seen anything that would suggest panels should have an equal gender balance, but I would be interested to hear what others think.
Many thanks
Rachel
