Dear colleagues
We have included improving this area of work in our Single Equality
Scheme Action Plan and would also like to hear of any good practice out
there.
Regards
Alex

Dear Colleagues,
Responding to Requests for Reasonable Adjustments
I am finalising a flowchart to outline the process by which the
University expects line managers to respond to requests for reasonable
adjustments and as part of the process am including a record for line
managers to complete. This will then be sent to the HR team for central
recording and monitoring.
I would be very interested to hear if anyone else has put something
similar in place, how it is working and anything you have learnt from
the experience.
AtW - when to make an application
Previously we have encouraged employees (who have been with us longer
than 6 weeks) to make an application to AtW only if costs were likely to
go beyond the £300 threshold. We are now intending to ask staff to make
an application to AtW, even when the costs are below the raised £1,000
contribution level. This so that AtW can record the cumulative costs
incurred by the University and should additional adjustments be
required, taking the total spend above £1000, we would then be entitled
to a contribution from AtW towards a proportion of the remaining costs.
I also favour this approach, as we will ensure we are tapping into the
expertise of the AtW team and their partners and the employee will be
made aware of a wider range of support/equipment that might be
suitable.
However, there are concerns that asking employees to make an
application to AtW for all adjustments will slow the process
considerably and that the burden of this will outweigh the benefit. In
response to these concerns, we are looking at whether it would be
appropriate to assign a threshold, below which we do not contact AtW.
I am interested to know whether any other HEIs:
- request that all staff apply to AtW regardless of the expected costs
of an adjustment;
- set a threshold level, beyond which AtW would be contacted;
- only contact AtW if the level of expenditure goes beyond the £1,000
threshold
I would really appreciate any thoughts you may have on any of the
above. If you would prefer to reply off list then please email
