Marie,
You may also wish to have a quick look at Appendix E of the Equality

Subject: Re: Wording for collecting new info in monitoring question
Hi Marie
the Stonewall website has a list of options for describing different
orientations which you may find useful. personally I like to always
present the issues and any choices of tickbox in alphabetical order,
that way I am less likely to get people assuming that I think one issue
is more important than others. I like your question for the "trans"
group - the one I used was "do you have person experience of being
trans-gendered, but that could be ambiguous.
regards, Deb

Subject: Wording for collecting new info in monitoring question
Hello all:
I am going to be proposing to Student Services that any surveys they
conduct on students should collect monitoring questions on the gender
(including trans), disability, race, age, religion and sexual
orientation. I have been turning my mind to the wording of the
monitoring questions that we haven't necesarrily have asked questions
before ... Primarily trans, sexual orientation and religion. Just
wondering if anyone else has been thinking about how to collect this
type of monitoring info and whether you have any suggestions.
Regarding students who are transgender/transexual, I understand that
there isn't necessarily consensus as to the wording of the question. I
am thinking of just having a simple question -- i.e., do you define
yourself as a member of the 'trans'community -- yes /no
For sexual orientation I was thinking - What is your sexual orientation
with tick box options of: Heterosexual; Lesbian; Gay; Bisexual
For Religious Belief I was thinking about using the wording from the
Census -
What is your religion with tick box options of: None; Christian;
Buddhist; Hindu; Jewish; Muslim; Sikh; Any other religion, please write
in.
Any feedback would be appreciated
