Dear colleagues,
I need to tap your brains. We are currently updating our Dignity at Work
and Study Policy and Procedures for staff and students. The policy defines
what's considered unacceptable behaviour (e.g., harassment, bullying,
victimisation) and applies to everyone, and the informal procedures for
staff and students are very similar indeed. However, when and if it becomes
necessary to invoke formal procedures, the paths then diverge. In the case
of staff, the Grievance Procedure would kick in, and in the case of
students, the Student Complaints Procedure.
We have put a new version of this policy out for internal consultation, and
one critic has come back to say that neither of the formal procedures would
work in the event of - say - harassment between a member of staff and a
student. My personal feeling is that because both the above formal
procedures involve investigation of allegations, the findings from that
investigation would point to the appropriate way forward, for instance,
taking corrective action via appropriate staff / student disciplinary
procedures as necessary.
What happens at your institutions? Do you have separate procedures for
dealing with unacceptable "crossover" behaviour between staff and students?
Thanks for any guidance you can give.
Best wishes,
Faith
