Dear Liz,
Here at Loughborough University, these issues has arisen. Departments are
aware of some religious requirements and try as much as possible to ensure
that exams and assessments do not stop people from observing their
religious duties or indeed enjoying festivals.
Establishments can make genralised provisions. However, individuals of a
particular Faith that do not require these facilities or due to their
practice require other consideration, then this too must be made.
We have seen with regards to disability - that many arrangements are made
for the possibility of students with a particular disability. Thus the
provision is not reactive - it is proactive.
If provision for religion could be made in line with those for disability,
it is not indirectly discriminating.
Regards
Parin
