Yea, he could have been lucky this time Aneela, because the captain was a
nice chap, though I would like to think that there had been appropriate
training and/or support for staff, based on the institution's requirements
for equality based good practice for all.
But what would happen next time, with a captain who happens to share the
racist woman's sentiments???
Institutional racism being condoned and promoted?
The question is how do we make sure, from an HE institutional point of view,
that good practice is consistently being provided for all and does not have
to depend on the goodwill of whoever happens to be making decisions at that
time, but rather on what the institution requires of all those who it
employs and pays a lot of public money, to provide its services.
I think this is where the RRAA requirements on institutional practice, if
responded to appropriately, will ensure good consistent practice for all.
But for this to happen, everyone who is involved, starting with the powers
that be within the institution, all staff, students and any other partners,
will need to clearly understand their roles, responsibilities,
accountabilities and liabilities and respond accordingly.
Unless the implementation requirements of our Race Equality Policies and
Action Plans are responded to, through monitored, assessed and appropriate
response based evidence, institutional and individual racism will continue
to be condoned through words that are worth only as much as the paper they
are written on.
This is what caused the 1976 Act to be amended in the first place, after the
findings and recommendations of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry.
Any comments are always most welcome.

What would you have done,if you were the captain??? Honestly???
How do you think that this applies to some of the challenges that we might
meet under the RRAA requirements for good practice for all.
I hope you come up with some interesting answers.
As usual, comments are welcome!!!
Regards
Mannie.
