Special educational needs and disability bill/act (2001) (SENDA)
It is respectfully noted that the Special Educational Needs and Disability
Bill has passed through the Parliament and is expected to receive the Royal
Ascent in the coming weeks.
This Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (2001) (SENDA) will amend
the Part IV of the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) (DDA) regarding
disability discrimination but also will amend another act regarding its
special educational needs section (for the international members of the
list, this is a UK legislation).
It is expected there will be a consultation on the accompanying code of
practice during the summer.
Once the new act is published a follow-up message will be sent to the list
in due course with online references to the Act if it is possible at that
time .
The reason for this message is that the Bill was relatively poorly covered
by the National Press in the UK. And where it was covered the focus was on
the first part of the Bill, special educational needs rather than disability
discrimination. This perhaps mirrored the focus of the Parliamentary
debates on the first part of the Bill.
