Our Personnel Officer with responsibility for Equal Opps. has forwarded me
an e-mail
sent out to your list by Nick Givens from the School of Education at Exeter
asking:
"have any of your institutions done anything explicit to reiterate that
Muslim students are weclome and valaued, and to make it clear to the whole
student/staff body that harassment remains unacceptable?"
I can't speak for the Personnel Department as to what they are doing for
staff, but as far as the Student Support Team at Bath goes, we have
discussed this issue and agreed to endorse the message that all are
welcome and that we take a firm line to support equal opportunities and
safe space. In the induction talks that I give to all Freshers (by
department) about the student support services and facilities here at
Bath, I include mention of the fact that we have a Muslim prayer room on
campus and I end my address with the following statement, which I
elaborate on a bit:
Equal Opportunities & Safe Space
The University actively promotes
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL
We will not tolerate harassment or bullying of any kind. If you experience
problems,
don't just put up with them, seek help from the
ANTI-HARASSMENT NETWORK
We also put the following statement up on all the main residence
noticeboards:
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES & SAFE SPACE
The University has comprehensive equal opportunities policies for staff
and students and is committed to maintaining an environment which is
free from unlawful discrimination and from harassment or bullying. The
Students' Union supports these policies and also operates a "safe space"
policy in BUSU premises whereby people can enjoy a safe and comfortable
environment free from harassment of any kind or on any grounds.
Failure to comply is regarded extremely seriously and may be grounds for
disciplinary action which may include dismissal or expulsion.
Please support your University and Students' Union in ensuring that all
members of our community are safe and comfortable in their working,
learning and living environments.
All Student Support & Services are listed in the Guide to Student Support
Services and on the Web. Please do contact the relevant service or the
Academic & Welfare Centre in BUSU if you have a problem or enquiry of any
kind.
Hope this is helpful.
