SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND WOMEN
AN ON-LINE CONSULTATION
The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee (sub-committee II) is
currently conducting an enquiry into 'Science and Society'. As part of its
deliberations, it has accepted a proposal from the Parliamentary Office of
Science and Technology (POST) http://www.parliament.uk/post/home.htm to
conduct an on-line consultation on Science, Technology, Engineering and
Women and submit a report on this to the Committee. There will, in due
course, be a government response to the Committee's recommendations and a
debate in the Lords chamber.
The on-line consultation is intended to enable scientists and others
interested in the role of women in scientific research and its application,
and in science, engineering and technological education, to have a national
dialogue on key themes relevant to the Committee's enquiry.
POST has a continuing general interest in 'electronic government' and in
using new techniques to enhance democratic debate, as well as in the
specific issues of the forthcoming dialogue.
The Hansard Society http://www.hansard-society.org.uk is presided over by
the Speaker of the House of Commons and is dedicated to promoting effective
Parliamentary democracy. It has run a series of on-line discussions, aimed
at enabling members of the public to state and share ideas on Parliamentary
matters. An evaluation of the on-line consultation process will be
published by the Hansard Society.
The current dialogue will be a collaboration by the Hansard Society with the
recently-established Women in Higher Education Register
http://www.where.ic.ac.uk (set up by the Committee of Vice Chancellors and
Principals of the Universities of the UK (CVCP). The CVCP's 'Athena Project
http://www.athena.ic.ac.uk is co-ordinating an expert advisory panel of
scientists, who will play a key role in the discussion.
Participation in the discussion is open to all. It is most definitely not
intended to be restricted to the academic world - participants from private
and public research institutes and the commercial world are warmly invited.
Participation is also welcomed from both sexes.
The discussion will run over three weeks from 25th October to 12th November,
with each week devoted to a specific theme. Each theme will be introduced
by a keynote contribution from leading figures in that field:
Week 1 Education: primary, secondary and higher education - first choices,
first constraints, first barriers
Week 2 Career: fulfilling potential, overcoming frustration
Week 3 Culture: does science suffer from its gender imbalance?
For further general information, and details of how to join, see the Hansard
discussion web site at: http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/hansard
