We piloted eo monitoring for students in our Student Support Office, which
started keeping track of students using the services of the Office four
years ago. Since then we have started to monitor students who have academic
progress difficulties, and had the first full-year reports on that at the
end of last year. We also monitor degree results, complaints and appeals in
terms of gender, age, disability, ethnic origin, entry quals, etc. All
statistical reports of this sort are considered by the Equal Opportunities
Steering Group, which is a joint committee of Senate and Council, and is
chaired by a Lay Member of Council (so it is quite high profile). It has to
be said that it is still early days, and we have not seen any significant
trends identified as yet, but we are keeping a close eye on the situation.
Our system works by recording eo factors such as ethnic origin and
disability, along with age and gender, as part of each student's personal
record. The initial information comes from the UCAS form, but we confirm
the personal record data with each student at the start of their first term.
We also collect the data for graduate students at the same time. Although
the data is held as part of the student record, it is kept under strict
security conditions, and is accessible to only a very small number of staff.
However, it does enable us to run statistical reports in anonymous form,
which is what we want to do for this purpose.
Keeping the details on the student record means that we do not have to
collect it separately for different purposes, but can always access the
stats anonymously if we have an individual's personal identifier, or by
cohorts of students if that is appropriate.
