Hi,
Here at the University of Essex we also have a Parents' Network which was established following our first Athena SWAN Bronze award back in 2013 (renewed 2017). To date it has a 150 members.
Some of the projects our network have been involved in (in addition to those you have mentioned below) are:
- extending our childcare provision for school holidays - previously our kids club CHUMS was only for children aged 8-14. With support from our parents network the age was lowered so that now children from age 5 can attend. The activities on offer were also extended to include arts and crafts as well as sports so that a wider range of children could participate.
- reviewing our work/life balance policy - to include a career break scheme and an option to allow staff to transfer from part-time working back to full-time working within 12 months following maternity leave should they wish.
- actively contributing to our day nursery consultation- which included changes to session times.
All of the above have made a real difference in helping to create a better work/life balance at the University and to better support working parents.
We are currently reviewing our parental leave provision so are expecting to involve this group of staff in these discussions as well.
I would also be interested to hear any other ideas.
Best,
Julia

Subject: Parents' Networks
Hi All
I am very keen that our Network Groups here at Chester have a real aim and focus so they don’t descend into focussing on things that are outside the groups' power to control.
Since our Parents' Network was established we have done some great things: setting up Parent Profiles so staff can informally contact each other about e.g. returning to work when breastfeeding, using university nursery etc; we have set up online role model profiles; created a guide for prospective parents and managers; developed checklists for before during and after leave for managers to use. Now I feel we have done so much in our first year, I need some new ideas of things to work towards.
Have your Parents' Networks worked towards any projects that have made a difference?
Looking for ideas and really grateful to anyone willing to share best practice
Thanks
Kathryn Leighton
