Hi Angela
Yes the same here - it is a legal entitlement as far as I understand it . We also give closure days in lieu of the woman is away during that period (eg the Chirstmas Break) so that there is no detriment.
Kind regards
Madeleine

Subject: Re: Maternity leave and statutory leave days
Dear Angela,
As far I'm aware, this was settled by a case. Anyone taking a period of long-term leave e.g. maternity, adoption, etc. is entitled to accrue their annual leave entitlement during that period.
It's more than just statutory leave - if their contract grants them additional days' leave, then they would be entitled to those as well so they don't suffer detriment compared to an equivalent staff member.
I'm not sure about 'adding on to maternity leave' - we just roll-over the entitlement to the following leave year, then it's up to the staff member and their manager to decide how that leave will be used. For example, some staff might choose to take those days weekly as a means to getting a temporary reduction in hours.
Best wishes,
Alex

Subject: Maternity leave and statutory leave days
Dear colleagues,
I was wondering whether any of you add statutory leave days on to maternity leave entitlement currently? I have been approached by a member of staff who is on maternity leave in this regard; it would appear that a number of local public organisations have adopted the approach of adding statutory leave days on to maternity leave, so that the member of staff does not 'suffer a detriment'. Apparently this follows a complaint which was settled prior to Tribunal.
This is not an area I am overly familiar with, so I was wondering whether this is standard practice across HE?
I'd be happy to collate and share responses...
