Hello

Thanks for all your responses. I now understand the term "Deadweight" but feel that it is very inappropriate to use it in this context. I intend to make a complaint to AtW about this and the fact that the case worker was very abrupt with the manager. Also that we have tried to be helpful to the employee by putting things in place so that she was not disadvantaged while she waited for AtW to respond and this has resulted in no help with the funding due to a lack of transparency with the rules.

In future, unless the adjustments are very expensive I will not put any other employee through the AtW process - the process has made this employee feel like they are a burden.

I have also just caught up with this and think it is insulting and demeaning. Agree if a minister used this kind of language it could be a resignation issue.

What about a letter from HEOON explaining that we find the term insulting, demeaning and degrading?

Kind Regards

Anne

So, I am obviously being obtuse or perhaps I am refusing to believe that a disabled colleague would be described as deadweight..really, can anyone shed a light on this what is deadweight?

Hello

Just thought I would update you on an issue with Access to Work.

We have a lady in a wheelchair whose son has been bringing her into work and collecting the wheelchair from its charging place and taking it out to her car for her and doing the reverse when she goes home. Unfortunately her son now has a job and is no longer available to do it for her. We put something in place for her temporarily so that she was not disadvantaged. This has apparently gone against us. We had a very abrupt response from the caseworker from AtW who was very abrupt to the employees manager on the phone: This was the response we got

Excerpt from AtW Guidance;

"Under AtW, we cannot provide help in situations where an employer has been providing support for an employee and then withdraws help as a money saving strategy. Employers have a legal obligation under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments, and if adjustments have already been made, employers cannot withdraw them just because AtW funding may be available.

If you have any doubts, you should request written evidence from the employer as to why support that was previously offered has been withdrawn.

Deadweight can also apply to help previously offered on a voluntary basis by a friend, relative or colleague if there has been no other change of circumstance, other than the withdrawal of help previously supplied voluntarily.

If deadweight applies you should not offer AtW support."

Unfortunately, under these circumstances Access to Work support is not available in this case, and this current application will now be closed.

Hi

Funding through Access to work may be available.

Hello

We have a female member of staff that we have purchased a wheelchair for and it is kept at work. Currently this member of staff comes to work with her son who goes and collects the wheelchair and helps her in and out of the car at the start and end of the day. The son now has a job and will no longer be able to help her with this. She has asked if the Porters would be able to help. I am sure it would be no problem asking them to bring the chair out to her but I am concerned about them helping her in and out of the car - both from a sensitivity and health and safety point of view.

Would this be something we should be assisting her with? Is there likely to be any funding available for her to employ someone to act in this capacity?
