Hi Helen
We ran our first Diversity Week 3 years ago but for the past 2 years we have had a Diversity Month instead because we found it easier to organize. Trying to fit everything into one week was a nightmare for us in terms of organizing and facilitating events and it was also difficult for staff to attend more than one event. The month works much better for us as the events are more spread out.
We set up a working group about 6 months before the Diversity Month which has a representative from each Faculty and Service as well as the Student Union. These people then suggest what their Faculty or Service will do to contribute to the Month. These suggestions vary a great deal and this year included things such as organizing a quiz, setting up a display, running a training sessions, organizing a fashion show - see full programme attached. We try and get a balance to cover all 6 strands in some way although inevitably the majority of events involve cultural diversity.
The most successful events seem to be those that are short, at convenient times e.g. lunchtime and well publicized. Workshops/training sessions etc work better when they are just for an hour at lunchtime rather than a whole day. While we publicize the whole programme we expect each Faculty/Service to do additional publicity for their specific events.
If you have any specific questions about what we do and which events work well please feel free to ring me for a chat.
Regards
Clare

Subject: Diversity weeks
Hi all
We're considering running a Diversity Week later in the year here at
Brighton, to help raise awareness and promote engagement on E&D issues
across the institution. I understand that some of you have run similar
events in your own institutions, and I was wondering if you could let me
know what these have involved and how they have gone.
Many thanks
Helen
