Hi there,
We had the launch of our Dignity at Work and Study booklet at the end of
September. We invited a guest speaker to talk at the launch, which was
well received by many senior colleagues. The booklet was circulated to
all staff on the day of the launch, along with a bookmark and postcard,
and we are working with the Students Association and others to circulate
to students. The materials were developed in conjunction with our
colleagues in Print Design Services. We have also developed a new
website to support this.
Basically the booklet is a positive way of promoting our harassment
infrastructure; it reaffirms everyone's rights to work and study in an
environment where we can be ourselves, and be treated with dignity and
respect, be free from discrimination, bullying and harassment, and
valued for our skills, abilities and contribution. It also promotes the
message that everyone has a responsibility to support and uphold dignity
at work and study, and to create a positive working and learning
environment, through treating each other with dignity and respect, and
to behave in appropriate ways that are not offensive to others. This
approach also tries to emphasise that colleagues in leadership roles
have a particular responsibility in ensuring that dignity at work and
study is promoted and bullying and harassment issues are managed
effectively; developing a culture of dignity at work and study is vital
if we are to fulfil our new vision.
This new approach was informed by staff and students, including the
Harassment Advisors, who felt that there was a low level of awareness of
Advisors, the Policy and an unwillingness to come forward with a query
or to make a claim. So we have recruited new Advisors, committed to
supporting them through a CDP style forum, and also are about to start
reviewing the Harassment Policy itself.
We have received some very positive feedback from across the university,
in particular, the proactive approach and universal relevance to all, as
opposed to the negative connotations of harassment.
To further support this, we are running sessions on harassment
(recognising, dealing with, supporting staff etc) for managers, team
leaders and supervisors over the next few months.
Best wishes,
Adrian
