Dear Anthony,
We include Equality and Diversity information in the Governors' induction pack. In addition we have recently circulated a hard copy of the Guide for Governors from the HEEON / HEFCE project (downloadable from the ECU site) to all governors and the complete pack to the chair as part of the meeting papers.
Our Board directly approves the Equality Policies and Schemes and receives an annual report covering their implementation, which I usually present. This gives an opportunity to cover E&D implementation and for the Board to ask questions and feedback on the Schemes. Because of the two new Schemes in the last year E&D has had a high profile on recent agendas.
I feel these actions have all contributed to a considerable raising of the profile of E&D at Board level and an increased awareness and understanding of the benefits as well as the issues.
Best wishes,
Mel

Subject: Equality Training for Board of Trustees, Governors, etc
Hi All,
We are looking at the various options for some form of equalities training for our Board of Trustees. We recognise that it has to have a strong oversight and strategic theme comensurate with their role and feel that our generic training package would not be entirely suitable.
We are looking (amongst other things) at bringing in a high profile external speaker with a proven reputation in Diversity; a senior academic or scientist with a background in equalities; or a straightforward legal briefing. I would be very interested to learn of the sort of methods other institutions have used and in particular whether you followed any of the above courses. Also of course how successful you thought (or found) it to be.
It would be useful to post 'on list' but please reply to me direct if you would prefer.
Thanks
Anthony
