Subject: Interesting conundrum
Dear all
I hope that this email finds you well and happy ?
I am discussing a 'knotty' issue at the University, with respect to how we should best respond to a situation of ongoing harassment of a member of staff - what actions could we take and how could we best support the individual and those around him - I think I see an EO angle on this so I thought I'd canvas opinion through yourselves !
This situation goes outside the range of 'normal' University situations (staff on staff or staff on student etc) - the harassment or stalking is being undertaken by a former student of ours and has been going on for some years - the member of staff has (privately) taken action through the police and the courts - so there is an injunction against the former student contacting him directly or indirectly through others, at either his home or his work. She is now banned from Bristol as a whole, as a result of her bail conditions.......she has been imprisoned briefly on account of her actions towards our staff member, and will be in court in August regarding her latest breach (which she is pleading not guilty to). She contacted the University again this Monday, despite all of the above and the massive £25 fine that the courts imposed on her for her last breach.
We have done quite a lot of 'practical' things to try to support our staff member and respond to the situation - but as with most university processes, or procedures, these are set up to deal with people behaving reasonably or rationally - and from a lay persons perspective, this situation suggests that the harasser/stalker may have mental health problems which mean that she is unable to do so. (and given her apparent state of mind, the courts process seems unlikely to resolve the issue).
So, does anyone out there have some form of process/policy or even guidelines that could be useful in these situations ? Also, any particular thoughts on possible support - we might have missed something - for our staff member would be helpful.
Many thanks
Dave
