Wow Marie, that is impressive! I will look to my laurels, thanks for
responding. You and I have identified off list that we have a similar
job brief so it is interesting to hear what you are doing.
I joined Nottingham just as the DES was being finalised and so didn't
have a great deal of involvement in it, however the annual review and
three yearly big review will be my chance to change and polish up some
areas. In terms of meaningful involvement of students I think I am going
to try for some targeted focus groups both inside and outside of the
institution (here I am thinking about disabled people) but this could be
replicated for other scheme overviews.
I would strongly recommend finding a budget to pay for this
participation (and will be doing the same myself) since too often we
expect people to freely give of their time and there can be an
assumption that students have lots of free time with little else to do
in it (!)
I'll let you know how I get on, I think it is going to be quite a slow
process and may involve some significant changes in culture.
Chris

Subject: Re: Gender equality questionnaires
I would like to follow up on Chris' post. I am the Student Equality and
Diversity Adviser at Brighton University - a new post which started in
November and which is meant to complement the Equality and Diversity
Adviser position which exists in the Personnel Department.
With regard to the GES and students I have been doing analysis of the
stats regarding student profile, progression and awards. I am also
asking for feedback from the managers overseeing the various services
that Student Services provide -- i.e., Welfare and Disability,
Counselling, Careers, Chaplaincy, Medical, and Nursery, to see if they
have gender differences in who is accessing the services, and what, if
any, gender differences may present itself in the problems, needs or
issues that the students have when they access the services. If I have
time I am also going to see if I can get feedback from several other
non-academic aspects of the University that touch on the lives of
students including Accommodation, Sports and Recreation and Health and
Safety. I will also be discussing these issues with representatives of
the student union.
The question I have is how are other Universities approaching the
requirement for consulting students? I have looked at the possibility
of a couple of focus groups or a short email questionnaire but my
concern is that students are presently being bombarded with surveys from
both inside and outside the university on a variety of issues including
equal opportunity and diversity. One stat I heard was that University
students will be surveyed approximately 30 times while at university
(don't have the ref at the tip of my fingers but can look it up if need
be).
I realize that with the tight time limit that the government has placed
the publication of the GES which restricts limits the way we can consult
students, we can only do what we can ... However I am concerned about
how to truly engage students in a process which is ultimately suppose to
address their needs.
If anyone does have any ideas or questionnaires they would like to share
I would be very interested in hearing about them. As well, I'll keep
the list updated about what we will be doing about consulting students.
In the meantime any ideas?
Thanks
Marie Paturel

Good morning everyone, this is my first post so please be gentle with
me!
I started at the University of Nottingham in November having held the
post of Service Co ordinator for Disabled students at NTU for 12 years,
my role here at the University is that of Diversity Officer for
students, this list was recommended to me by Janine Williams late of
Durham.
I've enjoyed reading the comments and note that many of you (at least
the active ones) mainly have an HR focused role which seems to 'spill
into' students, is this a correct assumption?
Like many of you we are working on our GES at the moment and an email
has been sent to all staff asking for comments on Gender issues, it is
not really a questionnaire as such more an invitation to consultation
and I am looking at adapting it to try and encourage engagement by
students, so I too would be extremely in any questionnaires or ideas you
have had for involving students in the consultation process.
This seems an extremely friendly and helpful list, it feels good to be
here!

Subject: Gender equality questionnaires
Hi and happy new year to all,
I would be very grateful for any information on any gender equality
questionnaires for staff/students or both that have been prepared by
anyone for the gender equality duty. I think this is something that
would be usefully shared on the network if you feel you are happy with
that, if not please reply off network.
Thanks and best wishes,
Syd.
