Dear colleagues
I have a half hour slot on staff induction but apart from this there is no mandatory
training.
My preference is to encourage Faculties and Departments to request training for their
staff and then to ensure the training is geared to the participants areas of work so that
they can see how equality and diversity relate to their work.
I worked for the police service for some years where mandatory training on equality and
diversity was the norm. A great deal has been written on how ineffective this training has
been and in many cases has led to entrenchment of hostile views. This has made me
wary of suggesting training on equality and diversity be mandatory. I am also aware that
here in my university there are many staff who know far more about discrimination than I
do, having taught modules on it for probation officers, social workers etc. To insist they
attend a basic course on equality and diversity would not make sense!
Regards

decided in favour or against a compulsory approach. Also, any research into the effects
of such an approach.
