Subject: News from ECU (disability and age team)
With apologies for cross posting
Dear colleagues
I am pleased to let you know that we will finally be taking delivery of
the ECU publication - Promoting Equality The Public Sector Duty on
Disability: suggested first steps for HEIs (ECU Briefing Paper 1) on 4
January 2005. We will post several copies of this out to our primary
contact in HEIs at the end of the first working week in the New Year and
would like to take this opportunity to thank very much all colleagues
who have helped with its production along the way. As soon as we can we
will put the publication on our website in both Word and PDF format.
The Disability Discrimination Bill which brings in the new positive duty
was introduced into the Lords on November 25 this year and a draft Code
of Practice on the new duty is expected on January 21st 2005. We hope
you will find the publication useful and timely. ECU will keep the
sector informed of developments with the passage of the Bill and the
introduction of the Code and will be involved with colleagues in the
sector in producing further practical guidance throughout next year on
this significant new duty.
(ECU will also produce in late January a short Upate on those parts of
the new Bill that are not about the positive duty ).
I am also pleased to introduce my new colleague, Chrissie Pepper, who
joined us in late November. Chrissie obtained a BSc in Social Policy
from Loughborough and is, at present, nearing completion of her three
year PhD research into equality and diversity within the UK construction
sector. This work has involved developing an equality and diversity code
of practice for the Institution of Civil Engineers. Her research has
also included original work on employer perceptions of disabled people
in the construction industry. We are delighted to have her in the ECU
team.
On the age front,we are only just beginning to get to grips with the
possible implications of the new legislation . In cooperation with other
key sector agencies and with the help of invididuals in HEIs we hope to
issue a brief initial consultation document on the legislation in the
early new year.
With very good wishes to everyone for a happy festive break and all the
best for 2005.
Liz Sutherland
