Westminster Briefing
Summer 2003 Breakfast Briefings
The House Magazine presents a series of breakfast briefings aimed at
providing a forum for practitioners to debate key issues with leading
figures from within Westminster and Whitehall.
Title: Equality: Towards a Single Government Body
Date: Thursday 3rd July 2003
Time: 8.45am - 10.45am
Venue: Westminster
"Existing equality Commissions; the Equal Opportunities Commission, the
Commission for Racial Equality and the Disability Rights Commission, have
made an outstanding contribution since their establishment. But we need now
to think about future institutions, and how to reflect a more integrated
approach to equality that meets the needs and expectations of the 21st
century." Barbara Roche MP, Minister of State for Social Exclusion, 23rd
October 2002.
Following Government consultation, the proposal to replace the three
existing equality Commissions with the creation of a single government body
has generally received broad support. However, there are differing views on
the structure that this new body should take and the powers that it should
have. Participants at this Westminster Briefing will have the opportunity to
discuss the feasibility of a single equality body and debate how best it
would effectively fight discrimination on all grounds, whether race, gender,
disability, sexual orientation, age or religion.
Delegates will be drawn from all sectors of the business community,
government departments and bodies, trade unions and the voluntary sector.
All Westminster Briefings take place within close proximity of the Palace of
Westminster; a continental breakfast will be served during proceedings.
Wheelchair access will be available and any other access or dietary
requirements should be notified to us upon booking.
Places on our briefings are strictly limited, therefore, I strongly advise
you to book as early as possible to GUARANTEE your delegate place(s).
Yours sincerely,
Parvin Madahar
