At Durham I am the Diversity Manager. This was a new post from October 2001.
I am seconded from the Personnel department for a 5 year period, initially
funded by the HEFCE money for HR strategy development. I report jointly to
the Director of Personnel and the Academic Registrar, covering the staff and
student side. I will shortly have part-time admin support, in the meanwhile
I get some support from Personnel staff. It is intended that I manage the
Diversity project, other members of Personnel and the Academic office may be
drafted in to work with me and we have an administrator currently looking at
SENDA with me.
We have an Equal Opportunities Committee, which is a sub-committee of our
Strategy Committee. It is Chaired by a pro-vice-chancellor, Professor Joy
Palmer, who has HR within her portfolio of activities. The Secretary of the
Committee is one of our Personnel Managers and it meets 3 times a year. It
has representatives of all groups of staff. We are increasing the membership
for the start of the academic year and stressing its role, particularly in
monitoring and implementing our race equality policy.
