Background
The Athena Award Scheme, which is open to all UK HEIs, was announced in
September 2001 (I Note 1/01/161. The Athena Awards will recognise and
celebrate the good practice that is developing in HEIs by SET departments
and groups of women working in support of Athena's aims - the advancement of
women in SET in HE and a significant increase in the number of women
recruited to the top posts. The Awards are supported by the Royal Society
and are intended to encourage, raise the profile of and disseminate a range
of creative approaches and good practice in action.
HEIs making submissions for awards will be expected to demonstrate how they
have:
* increased the number of women working in SET as postgraduates,
researchers and lecturers through to professors
* improved the career development of women in SET, their recruitment,
retention, and progression
* raised the profile and visibility of women in SET
* improved the awareness and understanding of the career barriers
faced by women in SET
Selection for the Awards will be in the autumn. The Awards Ceremony will be
at the Royal Society in February 2003, followed in March 2003 by a
Conference at the Royal Society to disseminate the learning from the best of
the submissions. The conference will launch Athena's comprehensive Good
Practice Guide, bringing together the good practice from Athena's previous
work and from the Awards.
