Learning from the Future: Foresight in Universities
A great opportunity to learn new techniques and 'think outside
the box'
Date: 15 July 2002
Time: 1100-1600
Venue: The University of Manchester
Speaker: Maree Conway, Director, Foresight and Planning,
Swinburne University of Technology Australia
Most universities are already using a variant of foresight in
their strategic planning without realising it, but put simply,
it's a way of developing a shared view of the future rather than
individuals developing their own, unshared, view of the future.
Swinbourne University of Technology are using scenario planning
as a way of drawing out people's expertise to inform their
strategic planning and have concluded a University-wide scenario
planning project.
This workshop is in two parts. The first part is a short
presentation about what foresight is; what methodologies can be
used to implement foresight in organisations, including a generic
foresight process to link foresight and ongoing strategic planning
and
a short case study of a foresight project underway at Swinburne
University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.
The second part will take participants through a modified
scenario planning process focused around the question "will
universities exist in 2020?" Scenario projects usually take
anywhere up to six months, so this workshop exercise is intended
only to introduce participants to the methodology and how it can
be used in strategic planning.
The target audience is planners primarily, but any manager
interested in finding out more about futures planning, and how it can
be integrated into strategic planning, would find it useful.
Participants in workshops already held at Swinburne have made
the following comments about their experience:
"Very insightful, well related back to our work in planning and
operating our 'core business'."
"...it's taken it from a plan to a developmental process."
"It flushes out all the 'hidden' and open issues that most
people
are unlikely to articulate individually."
"Demonstrates the importance of thinking beyond the box and
being
allowed to do this."
"The process we went through gave me a much clearer
understanding
of the value it can be to planning for the future."
"Helps break out of the present mindset."
Some pre-reading material will be made available before the
workshop to allow participants to familiarise themselves with the
scenario development process.
