Dear Susanna and other colleagues,
I really empathise with your situation and my advice to anyone who is in
this position is to genuinely carry on and do what they know they should do.
The RRAA, as with any other EO legislation is about working towards creating
best practice for all, by our institutions, both as service providers and
employers. It is therefore about doing what we genuinely can to adopt a
holistic approach towards equality as a whole and in all our functions and
for all, whatever their gender, race, ability, religion/belief,age and sexual
preference, based on the law of the land.
As institutions,we should always strive to adopt a holistic approach which
does not seek equality in one area while compacting inequality in another by
refusing to implement good practice for all. We also have to accept that we
will not get it right all the time but we should accept that in not getting
it right we are always developing ways of getting it right. So, let us get
on with what we can because this is the only way we can then call on those
others who also have responsibilities and accountabilities within the
greater scheme of things.
Look forward to comments and/or suggestions. In the meantime, please keep
going.
Regards
Mannie.

Subject: Re: : RRAA Specific Duties: Race Equality Policy
Hi, interesting, Faith. I raised a similar issue in my university's
response to the plans last June.
We take a more wholistic approach at MU. We believe all the eo
policy should be together, and should relate to all groups which
are the focus of EO concern. We believe that this is a better way,
since most people belong to more than one group; eg.: I am a
disabled woman, and I can find information on gender and disability
in our policy. Within the eo policy, we have procedures and codes
of practice relating to diffrent groups within the main policy.
We are still debating whether to change our eo policy, to make
Race equality in to a different section, or whether to develope a
stand alone policy.
What do others think?
Susanna.
