I have received the following e-mail from SCRE:
We [SCRE] are now in the final stage of collating information and
would be grateful to receive any brief comments you may have. If
you would prefer you can comment on the web site at

Thank you for your help with this project.
At the HEEON conference in July, Janet Powney gave a brief
presentation about the consultation exercise the Scottish Council
for Research in Education is conducting for the Higher Education
Statistics Agency/Higher Education Funding Council for England
about the requirements of EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES MONITORING
OF STAFF in the HE sector. Many of you expressed an interest in
this important area. We are now seeking your views about the
limitations of the current HESA procedures in relation to the two
collections of data on staff: the individualised academic staff return;
the aggregated staff return.
The overarching question is what are the data requirements for
effective equal opportunities monitoring of staff in higher education
institutions in the UK?
* What do you think are the limitations of the current HESA
procedures in relation to equal opportunities?
* What do you think are the limitations of the current HESA
outputs in relation to equal opportunities?
* What suggestions do you have for enhancing them in relation to
equal opportunities?
Your comments on these questions* are invited by
email to [log in to unmask] who will collate your
comments (without naming sources) into a Briefing Paper that can
go on to our web site for further discussion. Please feel free to draw
your colleagues' attention to the project; we would welcome their
comments as well.
