Ideally we would have a 'name' in overall charge at HEEON, rather than as a
patron. But if a patron, and if a peer, Jack Ashley might fit the bill?

Subject: HEEON figurehead
Dear colleagues,
For some time now the members of the steering group have
recognised the kudos for HEEON which might be attached to
having a well known "figurehead" (a number of people are
uncomfortable with the term "patron"). Berry had previously
approached Sir Herman Ousley, but his commitments on leaving
the CRE have prevented his acceptance.
At the last steering group meeting it was decided to approach
David Blunkett. Fiona Waye put out some feelers but received the
guidance that it would be inadvisable to approach a serving minister.
Berry has offered to make some enquiries regarding Gurbux Singh,
Sir Ousley's successor. Other suggestions include approaching a
Vice Chancellor with a proven commitment to EO or a peer of the
realm.
How do you feel about these suggestions? Do you have any of your
own? It would certainly help raise the profile of HEEON to have
someone in place who is well-regarded and well known.
We would really welcome your views and suggestions so please
respond by July 24th as we need to start making enquiries sooner
rather than later.
Enjoy a restful summer break - I hope everyone is going to manage
to have at least some time off!
Best wishes,
Val
