Subject: DLA News 2/20: RFI: age discrimination in university admissions
To: [log in to unmask]
Dear colleagues
I have received the following enquiry from Dan Sweeney, Policy Officer
(Disability) with the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland:
"I am concerned over access to University for mature students,
and the policies and practices that certain institutions adhere to that
prevent students over the age of 25 from applying for particular courses.
"In discussions with people from minority ethnic backgrounds, it appears that
there may be an element of secondary discrimination in terms of race and/or
gender where an age bar is used in admissions proceedures. I believe that
there is some case law on the gender side relating to a woman who applied
for a post within a students union (Welfare Officer?) but I cannot be more
specific than that. If there have been any developments along these lines
in GB., I would like to hear about them."
Please respond to Dan direct. I shall be grateful if you will copy your
responses to me.
